I am currently refinishing one side of a J 45 after fixing a pretty nasty side crack. It's a newer one. It's a sunburst but the sides are just a brownish color. I have tried test boards but the mahogany tends to turn everything more red than it should be. Does anybody here have any experience with mixing that brown color? It's proving to be a little tricky and before I spend a week on it I thought someone here might be able to clue me in to a good starting point. I'm using transtint dyes in Nitro. Thanks. Try adding some solid pigment to the mix. |

You could try adding some green to your finish. That should counteract the red you're seeing. |

Dyes by nature are semi transparent when added to finish materials. You cannot really create an opaque color with them unless you overload the resin or apply many, many coats. That is why you see the grain of the wood through a burst. That is why the red of the underlying mahogany is showing through and altering the tone. Solid pigments are what is used to create opaque finish colors. Adding a bit to your toner you create with the dye will plug up some of the "holes" and allow less of the mahogany to show through and spoil the color. |
